The first edition of BT India's Most Sustainable Companies - Summit & Awards 2025 was held on June 6 in New Delhi under the theme 'Charting India Inc's Sustainable Future'. The event brought together leaders from industry, government, finance, and sustainability to recognize corporate excellence in ESG compliance and responsible business practices. Union Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav delivered the keynote, while CareEdge ESG Ratings conducted a data-driven evaluation of the top 1,000 listed entities across 11 high-impact sectors. Winners were selected by a jury chaired by Rajnish Kumar, former SBI Chairman. Sectoral Excellence in Manufacturing awards went to: JSW Steel (Metals & Mining), JSW Energy (Power Generation), Shree Cement (Cement), Siemens (Heavy Electricals), Mahindra & Mahindra (Automobile OEMs), Hindustan Unilever (FMCG), and Godrej Properties (Real Estate).
The CareEdge-ESG Assessment Framework for the BT Awards uses a rigorous blend of quantitative data and qualitative insight to evaluate corporate sustainability. It assesses companies across 24 categories grouped under three core ESG themes-Environmental, Social, and Governance-with around 10 "Core" categories selected for their sectoral relevance. Scores for Key Indicators (KIs), sourced from Indian and international ESG standards, are calculated using both absolute (binary) and relative (benchmark-based) methods.
Each KI is assigned two types of weight: an activity weight that favors measurable outcomes over mere policy presence, and a materiality weight that reflects its impact within a specific industry. Core Category Scores are normalized and aggregated into Theme Scores, which are then weighted and scaled on a 0-100 range for cross-company comparability. Transition readiness and qualitative performance factors are also integrated, ensuring that final rankings reflect both ESG maturity and real-world sustainability impact.
